BIO

GIMMY (pronounced “gimmie”) is fast becoming renowned for her authentic spin on modern indie-rock with her effortless blend of garage rock, new wave, punk rock and folk. As the pseudonym of Byron Region female artist Gemma Owens, GIMMY creates music with no boundaries.
Eccentric and emotional, GIMMY is a singer-songwriter that wears her heart on her sleeve. She is unafraid and unapologetic in her lyrics and sound — yelling down the microphone in your face one moment, making your skin tingle with her stunning vibrato the next. Alongside her band consisting of Tom Withford (guitar), Michael Bradborn (bass) and Barclay Israel (drums), GIMMY’s live shows are energising, raw, beautiful and sweaty. Much like her recorded songs, the live experience implores us to feel everything and to be connected as humans.
GIMMY’s 2024 debut album Things Look Different Now is the epitome of what a debut record is all about: a collection of songs that showcase just how far GIMMY has come and how much things have changed — both in her life and musically — since Gemma Owens first launched her solo endeavour back in 2021. Through the album’s 12 tracks, GIMMY explores her own ideas and experiences of “change,” through themes dealing with relationships, ageing, life phases, success, grief and memories. The album is soaked in 80s and 90s nostalgia, with the band bringing together an eclectic collection of songs that weave garage and surf rock, post-punk, folk and indie rock together, packaged by GIMMY’s powerful, dynamic voice and uniquely Australian charm.
The debut album received critical accolades from Australian music media and radio. Rolling Stone (AU/NZ) said “GIMMY’s debut album is as stunning as expected,” and Double J said “Post-punk, alt-country, jangle pop, pub rock, new wave — it’s all here on songs that make the arrival of a hugely promising talent.” The record received Album Of The Week across community radio stations Brisbane’s 4ZZZ, Hobart’s Edge Radio and Sydney’s 2SER, who said the album was “easily among the most accomplished Australian records of the year.”
Performing around Australia, GIMMY has shared the stage with the likes of TOPS (CA), The Murlocs, Bad Dreems, Floodlights, Maple Glider, Nice Biscuit and more. As well as winning hearts at Brisbane's 2023 BIGSOUND, GIMMY took to the main stage at Splendour In The Grass 2023 after winning the triple j Unearthed competition and receiving “Feature Artist” on triple j Unearthed. In the short space of her career GIMMY has received high praise from Rolling Stone (AU/NZ), Life Without Andy, Pilerats, The Guardian, Tone Deaf, Happy Mag and more. GIMMY has received multiple spins on triple j’s Home and Hosed, and the music videos Bathrooms and SWEAT were both “Wild One” features on Rage. Multiple singles from the debut album were added to Spotify (AU/NZ) playlists Fresh Finds, New Music Friday, Rock Out, and GIMMY was the cover star on Local Noise, as well as playlisting on Apple Music’s New Music Daily, Good Times and more.
Stay tuned for GIMMY's debut International Tour in Europe and UK, 2026.
